Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users using these treatments must be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to starting weight in about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically see a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a intense return of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural management.
