Pixar has unveiled the preview for its new animated feature, The Hoppers Project, and it presents a premise that is both unusual and amusing.
Storyline Summary
Hoppers centers on Mabel Tanaka (played by Piper Curda), a 19-year-old nature-lover who develops the skill to communicate with wildlife thanks to experimenting with a form of Avatar-like-esque device developed by a college professors.
According to one scientist, ‘The conventional methods to comprehend animals just weren't working,” explains a researchers who designed the brain-transfer technology.
The Way The Invention Functions
Called “Hoppers,” the technology basically works similar to the neural link technology featured in James Cameron's Avatar movies, with a single key twist: Instead of waking up as a seven-foot-tall blue alien, the protagonist's awareness is moved into a mechanical animal form. Specifically, a synthetic beaver-form.
Conflict and Cast
Similar to Avatar's main character Jake Sully, Mabel soon ends up becoming overly involved with the residents of the animal kingdom, unintentionally causing an creature rebellion led by a regal monarch butterfly (voiced by Meryl Streep) and the leader of the beaver community (Bobby Moynihan), who are determined to “squish the humans.”
At one point, antagonist Mayor Jerry (Jon Hamm) is confined in his vehicle by a pair of beaver characters and a lizard, who subsequently threaten him via his phone's speech synthesis capability.
