The speculation about The Game Awards was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a strange statue. The secret has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is creating a brand-new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.
A Different Direction
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This phrasing hints that the team might be building a real-time experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it pioneered the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—elements that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths you can achieve by choosing a particular class or origin with a personal story.
The series is also wonderfully flexible, enabling players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be solved in multiple ways, often in lateral fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
The Journey Continues
It is this design philosophy that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can get ready for another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
