We present a dare for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. On the surface, it could look like conventional biological terror, but inside Together resides a profound contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.
A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics
Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.
The narrative begins when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.
A Paranormal Spark
While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a strange force begins influencing the couple. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.
The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, interspersing bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). The director orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.
Layered Performances
A large part of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.
Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He dreads the concept of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for mobility.
The director's cleverest decision is that he never makes Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.
Both characters confront the sort of issues that come with most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism avoids being overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama work together in harmony.
A Debated Finale
Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, certain partners having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.
Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can embark on right now.
Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
